Lesson Objectives

After completing this tutorial, you’ll be able to use Microsoft Word to effectively create a variety of hard copy documents such as letters, reports, memos, tables, and other documents. All of these documents can be readily used in an educational environment to help you with your teaching endeavors.

This hands-on tutorial will teach you the basic features of Word so you can quickly create and format a wide variety of documents. During this tutorial, which involves a real-life scenario, you’ll be creating a letter that will inform a child’s parents that the child is eligible for a special program.

Task Objectives

After completing this tutorial, you’ll know how to perform the following Microsoft Word functions:
  • Become familiar with the Standard and Formatting toolbars
  • Save Word documents
  • Properly align text
  • Create bulleted and numbered lists
  • Create and re-size tables
  • Change the font type and size
  • Cut and paste text

Scenario

You are the Director of the Gifted and Talented (GAT) Program at a local high school. As Director of the GAT Program, you have to inform the parents of GAT-eligible students that their children are eligible to participate in the GAT Program. You’ll create a letter using Microsoft Word that gives the parents of eligible children the following information:

  1. GAT Program goals
  2. Enrollment requirement
  3. Phases of the program, and
  4. the importance of the GAT Program.
